OUR ADVENTURE

On a fifteen-minute walk from the village Karimun, Redy rented a 2000 m² piece of empty land. This to realise a great business with my help! For both of us, a dream come true in our own unique way. The whole process is a tremendous challenge but for both of us the way to have a positive and inspiring impact on the society in Karimunjawa and everyone who temporarily wants to be part of it.

THE PROJECT

THE LAND

The land isn’t located on the main road but behind a single row of houses, with a private driveway and in an elongated trapezoid shape.

On the north side (street side) it’s covered with grass and palm trees. On the south side (the seaside) the land is covered with mangrove forest and on the left side of the land, there’s the possibility to make a path to the nearby beach. Finally, the land has a beautiful view of how the sun disappears into the sea every day during the sunset.

OUR UPDATES

2019 02 21 08.46.24 2

21 FEBRUARY

After a brief Javanese ceremony, for good luck and prosperity, the guys started the project!

24 & 25 FEBRUARY

Traditionally, the building process starts with making the foundation living space. Therefore, the first foundation for a tent/bungalow is already finished. However, our main focus right now is creating the fence and the foundation for the restaurant. (Almost) every morning Redy brings a can of coffee to the guys at the land at 7:00 and helps out as many as he can. He feels like it’s very important to help out and show his support as most of the men, who work with us, have been neighbours/friends or our family. I go as often as possible after I finished work or need a laptop break! Being at the project gives great energy because when you see all these men working on our dream. We just know it’s going to be something awesome and beautiful!

The working method here is not nearly as modern as in the Netherlands. Therefore, the guys walk up and down with the buckets are walked back and forth like a well-oiled machine and the cement is mixed with a shovel.

25 NOVEMBER

After a period of looking at different pieces of land, it’s final.. THIS IS IT!  A long piece of land from approximately 1500 m², possible sunset view, just out of town, surrounded by nature and with a beautiful peaceful vibe!

14 FEBRUARY

The first stones have been set and the land is free from the high grass, leaves and more natural waste.

23 FEBRUARY

It’s impossible to describe what an incredible roller coaster it’s already… and we just got started hahah. However, whether we are tired, happy, full of energy, angry or confused. We keep saying: ‘Exciting ya sayang!?’ (exciting right baby).

26 t/m 28 FEBRUARY

Progress is very clear! Besides working on the walls around the land and the bungalow foundation, the guys have also started the foundation of the restaurant.

2 MARCH

The stones for the walls are made on the island by Redy’s family. Nice employment for Redy his family and so money is saved because the stones do not have to be transported from Java.

5 MARCH

We have been away for a while and it’s great to see how hard the guys have worked in our absence.

The project started less than a month and the results are great. A little while longer and not only the fence but also the restaurant will have walls.

11 MARCH

After some rainy days, the guys are back on track. They had to slow down a bit but now as unstoppable as before. On their bare feet through the swampy ground! I’ve almost lost my slippers several times hahah 😆 Now I understand why they do not wear flip-flops.

16 MARCH

Another day, another day of finishing the fence and the foundation of the restaurant. Two of our guys left for a few days to see their family on the mainland so the progression is a bit slower then we’re used to.

18 MARCH

The foundation for the restaurant is almost ready for the cement. In the meantime, I am busy finishing up the ideas for the inside of the restaurant and plans for the accommodation. Do you see yourself waking up and looking up to these beautiful trees?

23 MARCH

After a day of rest (and a day to dry the cement), the first preparations were made for the pillars of the restaurant. In addition, the wall on the side is also finished.

31 MARCH

We had a couple of days with heavy rain and I have been home with a little fiver so I didn’t visit the project a couple of days but it’s extra cool to see what the progress looks like after these days! The first, and only haha, walls are getting shape so it’s about time to start making decisions about the interior.

6 APRIL

The beginning of this month, we decided to have a little break. To lean back for a second be proud and take a second. This was a good decision, we were going super fast but our days were too full. We needed some time to evaluate the process and wait for some funding from Holland. However, some people were still working so, of course, we visited them to check-in with them. Here you see our bricks being made.

16 APRIL

Just a little while longer and we are done with the cement and bricks. Then we will move to the wood for the floors and roof construction. Beside that, we probably will start with the electricity, bar and other stuff down stairs. Super exciting, can’t wait!

14 MARCH

Process continues… The fence gets closer to being finished and they guys have started working on the septic tank.

15 MARCH

In between building, we are already busy with designing the inside of our restaurant. This will be the first part of the business that we want to open. A friend here on the island had a bean bag sale and Redy and I stopped by to buy our first set of inventory.

21 MARCH

Big day today! The cement for the restaurant floor is getting into place. We choose to use ceramic for the kitchen and of course for the bathroom. That is why a cement substrate is needed. In the video, you see how the cement is made and how many guys helped out today to get it to the restaurant floor! Great to see all the hard work of our workers and friends who came to help out.

Also, as you can see in the background, the fence is nearly finished! Another week passed by and soo much progress! Friday is their day off but Saturday they will start with getting the pillars of the restaurant done.

24 & 25 MARCH

Day two & three, making pillars is in full swing. In addition, the rest of the group started preparing the land for a future garden. On the photo, you see the south side of our land, which we will not use right now but is a beautiful Mangrove forest back garden.

11 APRIL

Two of our guys went back to work to slowly start-up the whole process again. They’re working on the walls and the framework for the second floor.
